Format variety show :
The MCs and guests are locked in a landmark during closed hours and are required to leave before opening hours. In the first episode, they are divided into two teams and race to find the code to the main doors hidden in the landmark. With a total of 5 numbers, after one is found, a game is played to determine which team will start first in the next race. The losing team receives a punishment while the other team has a head start. After all numbers are found by either teams, they reach the door and enter the code they believe is correct. The correct team leaves the landmark while the losing team is punished inside the landmark.

Since the second episode, both teams will compete to find money hidden in the landmark and participate in games to win more money. The team with the most money will escape the landmark and win, while the losing team will be punished in the landmark. The money collected by the teams will be donated in the winning teams honour. Viewers can vote on the official homepage on who they believe will escape the landmark first, a lucky viewer who guesses correctly will have his/her name included in the donation.

Since the sixth episode, a consistent format has been used. Both teams compete to find Running Man Balls, the team which finds a ball or who wins a game will receive a ball of their team color (blue or red). The games and races are now considered missions. The missions are as follows:

  • Mission 1 features games related to the landmark. Previously, the Photo Zone Game (포토존 게임) was played at every landmark.
  • Mission 2 is the race mission. As of the seventh episode, the race mission will involve one team wearing bells chasing after the other team who is in search of hidden items. The "chasing" team will need to catch the other team by taking their name tags from their backs in one hour. The "hiding" team will need to find the hidden items and not be caught by the "chasing" team before the hour ends. During the eighth episode, it was hide and seek, with the hiding team carrying alarms that ring at certain times, and the chasing team catching the hiding team, also to be completed in one hour.
  • Mission 3 is Leisure Time for a Cup of Tea (차 한잔의 여유), in an attempt to keep the cast awake during the late hours, teams will roll a die to determine the amount of ingredients in that episodes drink. The team who finishes their drinks first will win. This mission hasn't been present since the eleventh episode due to controversies.
  • Mission 4 is Morning Team Sports, where teams will compete in a sport (badminton, tennis). This only aired in episode six, and only highlights were given in episode seven due to time restraints.

In the end, the Running Man Balls collected throughout the night are put into a lottery machine. Which ever color ball that comes out first will represent that team winning. The more balls that are collected, the better the chances of that team's ball being chosen. The losing team will have to commute home using public transportation with an embarrassing punishment.

As of the eleventh episode, teams are no longer used except for the race mission. Everyone will individually earn Running Balls throughout missions and the balls that come out will represent which individuals that win. The missions are as follows:

  • Challenge 1 vs. X (대결 1:X) (where X is the number of members on that episode) is a game where one person is against the rest of the cast. Either the one person or the remaining cast is trying to complete a mission without the other(s) knowing. In episode 15, 17 and 18, all members knew of the mission. If the one person/group succeeds, everyone but the person/group fooled will receive a Running Ball.
  • Find the Thief (도둑잡기) is a game where cards are distributed to all members, one card says Thief on it and the rest say Running Man. The object of the game is to avoid getting the Thief card. During each round, the person next will choose one of two cards from the previous person, and continuing the process with all players. Afterwards, games are played to determine who is first place and they will be exempt from the game and receive a Running Ball. Their card is given to another player of their choice. After 2 rounds, the final round winner can mix up the seating arrangements of the players. At the end, the person with the Thief card loses and all remaining players receive a Running Ball. As of episode 15, this game is no longer played; it has been replaced by missions related to the landmark.
  • The Bells Hide and Seek (방울 숨바꼭질) mission involves the "chasing" team, who are wearing bells, to catch the other team by taking their name tags from their backs in an allotted time. The "mission" team will need to find hidden items in the landmark and not be caught by the "chasing" team before the allotted time ends. After many changes to the format, this mission is considered the roots of Running Man, as it is the only mission that involves "running", and is the programs representative mission.

As of the 18th episode, those with no Running Man Balls are punished.
